Royal Mail announcement for changes for Signed For & Special Delivery services

Royal Mail will be removing the use of coloured adhesive labels used for Special Delivery Guarantee® and Royal Mail Signed For® products. The last date to use these labels will be from midnight on 31st October 2022. From 1st November 2022 clients will be required to print barcodes alongside franking indicia. Due to meter decertification, non-Mailmark® franking machines/meters will not be supported.

IJ models are not compatible with Royal Mail 1D services


IJ franking machines cannot be updated for 1D services. These models are impacted by Royal Mail decertification activity and will not produce franking indicia after 31st December 2022. For more information on decertification read our Royal Mail franking machine decertification FAQs.

IS models are not compatible with Royal Mail 1D services


IS franking machines cannot be updated to produce the 1D barcode for Special Delivery and Signed For services.  We are providing users of these machines with a complimentary subscription to simplymail lite. This online application allows customers to produce the new 1D barcode quickly and easily. There is no charge for this solution and customers will continue to benefit from franking prices for these services.

Customers will be provided details of how to register along with simple to-follow steps for using the application.

The IN-range franking machines are unable to be updated to produce the 1D barcode for Special Delivery and Signed For services. We are providing users of these machines with a complimentary subscription to simplymail lite. iX models are compatible with Royal Mail 1D services


The latest iX-range of franking machines produce the 1D barcode for Special Delivery and Signed For services.  

Customers with these machines have 3 options.

  1. If the machine was purchased after 15th October 2022, the machine will produce the 1D barcode required.
  2. If the machine was purchased before 15th October 2022 we are providing users of these machines with a complimentary subscription to simplymail lite. This online application will allow customers to produce the new 1D barcode quickly and easily. There is no charge for this solution and customers will continue to benefit from franking prices for these services. Customers will be provided details of how to register along with simple-to-follow steps for using the application.
  3. If the machine was purchased after 1st April 2022 and is SMART enabled the machine will produce the 1D barcode required.
