Feel Good Stories: Care Homes Community Focus, Operation Love Letters, Vitas Healthcare

These amazing initiatives started for members in the communities to connect with one another, bringing a bit of brightness to any day, all through the art of mail. Pay it forward and take a moment and think of someone you can write a letter or send a note to, whether it be a close friend, loved one, family member, or even the local healthcare or senior living center. Writing the message will have you feeling happy and connected to the recipient, and the recipient will surely be excited to receive the message. Small gestures, such as a letter or note, even small package, can make the world of difference.

An Post in Ireland
While the world moves through the pandemic many people remain apart from their loved ones. An Post, the postal service in Ireland, recognized this. They introduced a new program, Care Homes Community Focus to promote the sending of physical mail to residents in care homes.

An Post made it easy to send love to those living in care homes across Ireland by ensuring free postage. With increased restrictions in nursing homes across the country and to bring a little joy, An Post will ensure free delivery of all card and letter mail posted to and from residents of Nursing and Care homes in the State until January 31st, 2021.

By writing FREEPOST where the stamp would normally be affixed, An Post will carry cards, letters, large envelopes and packets (weighing up to 2KG) without a postage stamp.

Customers can send these items through the Post Office network and post boxes across Ireland.

Operation Love Letters in Big Spring, Texas
Operation Love Letters is stepping up to spread love and kindness through the community.

The effort is collecting personal letters to drop off at places like nursing and retirement homes. Various locations in Big Spring, Texas have a decorated bucket for people to come by and drop off a letter.

The community is asked to write encouraging letters from the heart and addressed as "Dear friend" or "Dear beloved".

Buckets will be picked up on November 30 and the letters will be distributed within the first two weeks of December.

Vitas Healthcare in San Antonio, Texas
Candace Ramos and her team at Vitas Healthcare had a goal to collect 175 letters for veterans in the San Antonio community.

“It is very emotional and, you know, reading a letter ... can be interpreted so many different ways and it can tell a story from far away and really just take to heart that it’s someone took the time to recognize you and talk to directly to you and write that special letter for you,” she said. “Due to the many challenges of covered this year, we saw the need to make sure that veterans who live specifically in long term care facilities such as nursing homes or assisted livings receive a tangible recognition that lets them know that their community is thinking of them and acknowledges their sacrifice,” Ramos said.
